About ISMETT
ISMETT (Istituto Mediterraneo per i Trapianti e Terapie ad Alta Specializzazione) is an internationally recognized transplant and high-specialty medicine center located in Palermo, Sicily. Established in 1999 as a unique joint venture between the Region of Sicily and UPMC (University of Pittsburgh Medical Center), one of the world's leading academic medical centers, ISMETT combines Italian clinical excellence with American management and quality standards.
The institute holds JCI accreditation and is one of Italy's most prestigious specialized medical centers. With 78 beds dedicated exclusively to transplantation and advanced therapies, ISMETT has performed thousands of organ transplants and complex procedures, earning recognition as a center of excellence for the Mediterranean region.
The liver transplant program is ISMETT's flagship specialty, performing adult and pediatric liver transplants including living-donor procedures, split-liver transplants, and combined organ transplants. The kidney transplant program covers deceased and living-donor kidney transplantation with advanced immunosuppression protocols. The hepatology department manages complex liver diseases, viral hepatitis, cirrhosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma with multidisciplinary approaches.
The gastroenterology department offers advanced endoscopic procedures, interventional radiology, and digestive disease management. ISMETT's UPMC partnership provides access to cutting-edge clinical protocols, joint research programs, and physician exchange opportunities.
